Profile
OVERVIEW
Airborne Gymnastics has been one of Northern California’s most celebrated gymnastics programs since its founding in September 1994 by co-owners Melanie Ruggiero, Leah Parker, and Mary Ann Smutnak. What began as a dream to provide a place for all children to experience the beauty of gymnastics has grown into a 25,000-square-foot training complex in Santa Clara that is now recognized as one of the top programs in the nation. Airborne has produced more NCAA scholarship athletes than any other gym in Northern California, a remarkable distinction that reflects the depth and quality of its competitive coaching program over three decades.
Located at 1515 Walsh Avenue in Santa Clara, Airborne serves children from age one through 18 with recreational gymnastics, competitive team training, parkour, adult gymnastics, and a robust birthday party and day camp program. The co-owners and their long-tenured staff are a cornerstone of the gym’s identity, with many instructors having been employed at Airborne for 15 to 25 years.
THE GYM
The 25,000-square-foot Walsh Avenue facility is fully air-conditioned and equipped for all levels of women’s artistic gymnastics as well as parkour and trampoline and tumbling training. The facility’s scale allows the gym to run recreational classes, competitive team practices, and open gym sessions simultaneously without crowding. Airborne is a NorCal member club and a USA Gymnastics member, and its competitive teams regularly qualify athletes to state, regional, and national championships. Coaches are present and accessible throughout the week, and the collaborative culture between owners, managers, and coaching staff is one of the program’s defining strengths.
PROGRAMS
Preschool and Recreational Classes
Classes begin at age one with parent-participation sessions and progress through recreational gymnastics levels for children up to 18 years old. The curriculum emphasizes fitness, self-confidence, and coordination while keeping the experience fun at every level. A free trial class is available for new students before committing to enrollment.
Competitive Team
Airborne’s competitive team program is invitation-only and has produced the highest number of NCAA gymnastics scholarship athletes of any gym in Northern California. Athletes compete throughout the NorCal circuit at compulsory, optional, and Xcel levels, with the strongest competitors qualifying to Western Championships and National Championships each season.
Parkour and Adult Gymnastics
Parkour classes are offered for children and teens, providing an athletic and creative complement to traditional gymnastics instruction. Adult gymnastics classes are available for students 18 and older, making Airborne one of the few South Bay gyms to offer a sustained adult program.
