Bay Island Gymnastics

OVERVIEW

Bay Island Gymnastics (BIG) has been serving families in Alameda County since 1984, making it one of the longest-running gymnastics programs in the East Bay. Located at 3775 Alameda Avenue in Oakland, BIG operates out of an 18,500-square-foot state-of-the-art facility that accommodates every level of gymnast, from preschoolers just learning to walk to advanced competitive athletes training the most difficult skills. The gym’s motto — BIG believes every child is a star — reflects its commitment to nurturing individual potential in a fun, safe, and supportive environment.

Bay Island is a NorCal member club and USA Gymnastics member, competing in the USAG Developmental Program. All BIG coaches are USA Gymnastics certified instructors or professional coaches, Safety/Risk Management Certified, SafeSport credentialed, and Professional Development Accredited. BIG serves the Oakland, Alameda, Castro Valley, Berkeley, and Piedmont communities.

THE GYM

The 18,500-square-foot Alameda Avenue facility includes all standard gymnastics apparatus for women’s events and trampoline, multiple trampolines, a foam pit with a sky-high swing, an indoor playground, and a pro shop with leotards available for purchase. Free Wi-Fi is provided for parents, and a work/study area upstairs is available for competitive athletes during practice. The birthday party program is a standout offering at BIG, with dedicated staff handling all setup, entertainment, cake service, and cleanup for a fully hands-off party experience.

PROGRAMS

Preschool Gymnastics

BIG’s preschool classes introduce children to gymnastics through developmentally appropriate activities focused on motor skills, social development, reading readiness, and coordination. Small class sizes ensure each young student gets personal attention from their coach.

Recreational Gymnastics, Parkour, and Ninja

Boys and girls recreational classes are available for ages six and up, covering all Olympic gymnastics events alongside trampoline instruction. Parkour classes and Ninja classes add movement variety to BIG’s programming, providing high-energy options for students interested in obstacle and acrobatic training.

Competitive Team

BIG’s competitive team participates in the USAG Developmental Program, providing structured team training for gymnasts ready to advance beyond recreational classes. Placement is by evaluation and coach recommendation.
