OVERVIEW
Head Over Heels Athletic Arts has been a beloved institution in the East Bay gymnastics community since founder Kathleen Macchia opened the first 800-square-foot location in Oakland in November 1977. Nearly five decades later, Head Over Heels operates from a large, modern facility at 4701 Doyle Street in Emeryville, serving approximately 1,500 students per year with a wide range of programs that reflect the gym’s belief in gymnastics as a foundation for lifelong physical health and active living.
The gym is a nonprofit organization committed to serving all of the East Bay’s diverse communities, with tuition assistance provided when needed to ensure access for families across all income levels. Head Over Heels offers programs for tots as young as 18 months through adults, with competitive teams, recreational classes, specialty needs gymnastics, summer camps, open gym sessions, date nights for parents, and seasonal programs throughout the year.
THE GYM
The Emeryville facility at 4701 Doyle Street, Building F, is one of the largest gymnastics facilities in the East Bay, praised by families for its spacious layout, modern equipment, and the wide variety of programs running simultaneously. Preschool gymnasts and competitive team athletes often share the gym space on opposite ends, creating a vibrant atmosphere where all levels of the sport are visible and celebrated. The gym employs a large rotating coaching staff and has been recognized for decades of community service to the East Bay.
PROGRAMS
Tots and Preschool Classes
Gymnastics classes begin at 18 months, with age-grouped sessions for toddlers and preschool-age children. These classes focus on motor development, social skills, and building a love of physical activity through gymnastics-based play and structured movement.
School-Age Recreational and Special Needs Classes
Four levels of school-age gymnastics are available for beginner through advanced students in ages 6 through 14, along with dedicated special needs gymnastics classes that have long been part of HOH’s commitment to inclusive programming.
Competitive Team and Camps
The competitive team program competes in NorCal-sanctioned events at both Junior Olympic and Xcel levels. Day camps are offered throughout summer months for preschool and school-age children. Parents Night Out events and open gym sessions provide additional access points to the facility throughout the year.
