Dakota Star Gymnastics

OVERVIEW

Dakota Star Gymnastics is located at 111 Old Red Trail NE in Mandan, inside the Midco Gymnasium at the Starion Sports Complex — a state-of-the-art recreation facility operated in partnership with the Mandan Park District. Founded in 1976, Dakota Star is one of North Dakota’s oldest continuously operating gymnastics programs, now in its fifth decade of serving the Mandan-Bismarck community and the surrounding rural communities of Burleigh and Morton Counties. Families from Mandan, Bismarck, and as far as Steele, Flasher, Fort Yates, New Salem, Washburn, Bowman, and more than a dozen additional communities across central and southwest North Dakota have enrolled at Dakota Star — a geographic reach that reflects the program’s reputation as the quality gymnastics destination for a region with limited alternatives. The organization operates as its own independent non-profit entity in association with USA Gymnastics and Mandan Parks and Recreation, with the Mandan Park District providing facility access, advertising support, and inclusion in MPD events.

Dakota Star offers recreational classes for ages 18 months through 18 years, including co-ed preschool groups, boys Fun Fitness classes, and the developmental Stars gymnastics program for girls at different stages of development. The competitive team includes Xcel Prep, Xcel Silver and Gold, and Level 3 through 6 Junior Olympic teams — alongside the Mandan High School Braves varsity team coached by McKenzie, the Program Coordinator. The gym hosts the annual Superstar Spectacular invitational meet, one of the signature gymnastics competitions in the upper Midwest. Coach Mike serves as the competitive head coach with 11 years of experience, and the office is coordinated by Dawn.

THE GYM

The Dakota Star Gymnastics facility in the Midco Gymnasium at the Starion Sports Complex, 111 Old Red Trail NE, is accessible through the Starion Sports Complex main doors — take the first right and the Midco Gymnasium is straight ahead, fully handicap accessible. The gym runs Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30 PM to 9:00 PM, Wednesday from 3:30 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday from 3:30 PM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with public open gym from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Saturdays and birthday party reservations available Saturdays from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM and Sundays from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

PROGRAMS

Preschool and Recreational Classes (Ages 18 Months – 18 Years)

Co-ed preschool-specific classes, boys Fun Fitness classes, and the developmental Stars program for girls span the full age range from 18 months through 18 years, with structured progression and coaches who follow the Mandan Public Schools inclement weather closure policy for cancellations.

Competitive Team, Show Team, and Mandan Braves

The competitive program includes Xcel Prep, Xcel Silver and Gold, and Levels 3 through 6 Junior Olympic teams. The Show Team is open by tryout and performs at community and competitive events. The Mandan High School Braves varsity team trains at Dakota Star under Program Coordinator McKenzie.
