Monterey Bay Academy of Gymnastics

OVERVIEW

Monterey Bay Academy of Gymnastics has the distinction of being the oldest gymnastics center west of the Mississippi, with roots tracing back to 1964. The gym has served the Monterey Peninsula community for over six decades under various names, most recently operating as the Monterey Bay Academy of Gymnastics under owner Jessica Rodriguez, who was honored with the KSBW Salute to Small Business Award for best woman-owned business in Monterey County. Located at 1663 Catalina Street in Sand City, the gym serves boys and girls ages 18 months through 18 years in a welcoming, family-focused environment.

Monterey Bay Academy of Gymnastics is a NorCal member club and USA Gymnastics member, competing on the regional circuit as the Monterey Peninsula Gymnastics competitive team. The program offers preschool gymnastics, recreational classes, and competitive team training, alongside birthday parties and seasonal camps.

THE GYM

The Catalina Street facility in Sand City — just north of Monterey on California Highway 1 — is easily accessible for families throughout the Monterey Peninsula, Seaside, Pacific Grove, and Carmel. The gym is equipped for women’s artistic gymnastics and provides training space for both recreational and competitive athletes. Under Jessica Rodriguez’s ownership, the gym has maintained its community-first identity while continuing to develop strong competitive team athletes in the NorCal circuit.

PROGRAMS

Preschool and Recreational Classes

Classes are available for children from 18 months through 18 years, covering preschool gymnastics and recreational programs for boys and girls at multiple skill levels. The program is structured to develop physical fitness, coordination, confidence, and love of movement at every age.

Competitive Team

The Monterey Peninsula Gymnastics competitive team participates in the NorCal circuit, providing athletes with structured competitive opportunities within the USAG Junior Olympic and Xcel programs. Team placement is by coach evaluation.
