OVERVIEW

Santa Cruz Gymnastics Center (SCGC) is Santa Cruz County’s premier gymnastics training center, located at 2750 Soquel Avenue on the east side of Santa Cruz. The gym’s mission is to build a community of people who support each other’s growth, learning, safety, and development through a shared love of gymnastics and fun. SCGC serves students from 18 months through adults with a comprehensive program including toddler classes, preschool gymnastics, recreational classes, adult open gym, summer and holiday camps, birthday parties, and competitive teams. SCGC holds a long history in the Santa Cruz community and is operated by Jim Kinney, who has been closely involved with the program for decades.

SCGC is a NorCal member club and USA Gymnastics member, with competitive teams competing in the USAG Women’s Development Program at Levels 3 through 5 and in the Xcel program at Bronze through Sapphire levels. SCGC uses an annual open tryout process for competitive team placement, making the program accessible to any student enrolled in recreational or pre-competitive classes.

THE GYM

The Soquel Avenue facility is a large, well-equipped gymnastics center with vault, uneven bars, balance beams, a spring floor, tumble track, trampoline, and a foam pit. The gym runs makeup classes once a month for enrolled students and produces monthly Skill of the Month and Shape of the Month programs to give recreational gymnasts structured learning goals throughout the year. The annual Rec Meet in May is the flagship community event of the year, with all enrolled students invited to participate. Adult gymnastics open gym is also offered, making SCGC one of the few Santa Cruz County programs to serve athletes from 18 months to adult.

PROGRAMS

Toddler and Preschool Classes

Open Play for toddlers with a parent or guardian and Kinderstars classes for ages two through four introduce the youngest students to gymnastics through free exploration and structured movement activities in a safe, padded environment. Rising Stars classes for ages four and up prepare students for transition to the recreational program.

Recreational, Boys, and Adult Gymnastics

Beginner through Advanced recreational classes are available for girls ages seven and up, with a separate track for students ten and older. Boys gymnastics covers floor, vault, parallel bars, rings, pommel horse, and high bar. Adult gymnastics open gym is available for retired athletes and newcomers alike.

Competitive Team

SCGC’s competitive teams compete in USAG Levels 3 through 5 and Xcel Bronze through Sapphire. The open tryout process ensures any student who demonstrates the required strength, flexibility, skills, and coachability has a path to competitive gymnastics regardless of their prior program track.
