Cameron Family YMCA Gymnastics

OVERVIEW

The Cameron Family YMCA Gymnastics program in Santee offers a complete range of USAG-based gymnastics classes for toddlers through teens — and adults — from the Cameron Family YMCA at 10123 Riverwalk Drive. Rooted in the YMCA’s long-standing mission of building strong kids and strong communities, the Cameron gymnastics program gives children in Santee and the East County a welcoming, encouraging environment in which to develop gymnastics skills, physical fitness, self-confidence, and teamwork. The program’s curriculum is built on the skills, levels, and progressions developed by USA Gymnastics, ensuring that every student receives structured, progressive instruction from their first preschool class through the competitive team.

The Cameron Comets competitive team competes against both private clubs and YMCAs across San Diego County, providing a genuine competitive experience in a supportive environment that emphasizes building healthy bodies and strong minds. The Y-League pre-team program gives newer competitive athletes experience in a lower-stakes format before they advance to the full Junior Olympic competitive circuit. Department Head Linnea Campbell and Gymnastics Team Director Mindy Lacy lead the program’s administrative and competitive operations.

THE GYM

The Riverwalk Drive facility is the Cameron Family YMCA’s main building in Santee, providing convenient access for families in Santee, El Cajon, Lakeside, La Mesa, and the broader East County area. The gymnastics program uses YMCA facilities at the Riverwalk location and benefits from the Y’s infrastructure, community ties, and mission of making high-quality youth programming accessible to all families regardless of income. Financial assistance is available through the YMCA’s open doors scholarship program.

PROGRAMS

Parent and Child, Preschool, and Hot Shots

The Parent and Child class for ages 2.5 to 4 years provides the youngest students with a supported transition into independent gymnastics classes. Preschool Gymnastics for ages 3 to 5 builds independence, coordination, and foundational skills. Hot Shots classes in three levels serve girls and boys ages 3 to 7 who are ready for more challenging skills but not yet at recreational level.

Recreational Gymnastics

Girls’ and boys’ recreational classes advance through multiple skill levels, with class placement based on age and demonstrated skill rather than age alone. All levels cover all major gymnastics events and are structured to progressively develop strength, flexibility, technique, and love of the sport.

Cameron Comets Competitive Team

The Cameron Comets compete in both YMCA-affiliated events and SoCal-sanctioned Junior Olympic competitions, offering a full competitive pathway from pre-team through optional levels for athletes who demonstrate the interest and ability to pursue competitive gymnastics.
