Profile
OVERVIEW
American Gymnastics Academy (AGA) has been one of the Long Beach area’s premier gymnastics programs since its founding in 1985, operating from its facility at 2277 Redondo Avenue in Signal Hill. Family owned and operated by Carol and Shane McIntyre — who combined a shared love of gymnastics and teaching children and built AGA from a dream into one of Southern California’s most decorated programs — AGA serves over 800 students and competes over 150 athletes each year in its award-winning Compulsory, Optional, and Xcel programs. Athletes compete in upwards of 10 local, regional, statewide, and national competitions each season, and the gym has been a proud partner in helping athletes earn college athletic scholarships to Cal Berkeley, UC Davis, UCSB, Cal State Fullerton, Boise State, UCLA, San Jose State, and Arizona Christian.
AGA’s competitive program has produced National Champions including Kristin Chang, Jennifer Kasler, Triandie Wold, Nicole Kilroy, Hailey Gaspar, Holly Partridge, Richelle Asa, Sekai Wright, and Trisha Raquel — a roster of individual champions that reflects the depth of AGA’s coaching excellence over four decades. The gym annually hosts The Long Beach Open, a three-day invitational that attracts over 2,000 gymnasts from across the nation, and puts on The AGA Holiday Show, an in-house performance for families each season. All AGA staff are USA Gymnastics Safety Certified, CPR and first aid certified, and pass state and federal background checks.
THE GYM
The Signal Hill facility is a spacious, air-conditioned gymnastics center equipped with state-of-the-art apparatus for all Olympic events. Classes range from 45 minutes to 2 hours in length and are structured to build skills and character across every age and level. The gym provides a warm, family-oriented environment where, in the words of its founders, every child who comes to the program becomes a part of the AGA family. Birthday parties for ages 4 and up and seasonal summer camps round out the gym’s year-round programming calendar.
PROGRAMS
Preschool (Tiny-Tots) and Recreational Gymnastics
Structured developmental classes are available for children ages 1 through 17. The Tiny-Tots class focuses on eye-hand coordination and foundational movement for the youngest students. Girls’ recreational classes are 90 minutes, covering rolls, cartwheels, handstands, vault, beam, and bars with tumble track work for aerial awareness. Boys’ recreational classes are 90 minutes, focusing on cartwheels, handstands, rings, parallel bars, high bar, pommel horse, and vault.
Competitive Team
The competitive program trains over 150 athletes each year across Compulsory, Optional, and Xcel formats. Two-hour team classes cover vault, beam, bars, tumbling, dance, strength, and flexibility. The program has produced National Champions and college scholarship athletes throughout its 40-year history and hosts the Long Beach Open annually, one of the largest gymnastics invitationals in the country.
