Garden Island Gymnastics

OVERVIEW

Garden Island Gymnastics is Kauai’s gymnastics program, located at 5887A Kawaihau Road in Kapaa — in the residential Kapahi area, just minutes from the heart of Kauai’s east side. Founded by Karla Villanueva-Bernal, a former competitive gymnast with over 30 years of coaching experience, Garden Island Gymnastics serves students of all ages with recreational and competitive gymnastics in a 4,700-square-foot warehouse facility that houses all the equipment necessary for students of every age and ability level. The gym’s name celebrates Kauai’s identity as the Garden Isle — the lushest and oldest of the main Hawaiian islands — and Karla’s personal passion for the sport and the community she serves is evident in every class and every athlete who trains there.

Garden Island Gymnastics is a USAG member club and competes in USAG Hawaii state events and Region 2. As the only dedicated gymnastics facility on Kauai, Garden Island Gymnastics serves a community of approximately 73,000 people across the entire island, making it an essential resource for Kauai families seeking quality gymnastics instruction. The gym offers parent-child classes, preschool gymnastics, recreational classes, and competitive team training, with head coach Olguita supporting Karla’s leadership of the full program.

THE GYM

The 4,700-square-foot Kawaihau Road facility provides a complete gymnastics training environment for all ages, conveniently located next to the big red barn in Kapahi — a landmark familiar to Kauai east-side residents. The gym’s accessible, community-oriented culture has made it a beloved institution on an island where youth athletic options are naturally limited by Kauai’s small population and remote location. The gym is open to make-up classes within 30 days of a missed class for enrolled students, and full monthly tuition payment secures class placement and scheduling priority.

PROGRAMS

Parent and Child Gymnastics

Parent-child classes begin for walking-age students, with the parent on the floor throughout class to facilitate bonding and guided gymnastics exploration. The class moves through a circuit of beam, bars, floor, rings, and vault with coach guidance, building coordination, balance, and early gymnastics foundations in a warm, shared experience.

Preschool and Recreational Gymnastics

Preschool classes transition students to independent instructor-led gymnastics, with stretching, conditioning, and progressive skill development on all major apparatus. Recreational classes progress through multiple levels from beginner through advanced, covering handstands, cartwheels, forward rolls, technique, and form with an emphasis on safety, fun, and genuine skill development.

Competitive Team

The Garden Island competitive team competes in USAG Hawaii state events and Region 2, representing Kauai in the Hawaii gymnastics community and giving the island’s most dedicated athletes the opportunity to compete against their peers from across the state and region.
